What types of external breast prosthesis are available?
There are several types of prostheses available depending on your type of mastectomy, your lifestyle and your personal preference.
A post-mastectomy bra looks and feels like a traditional bra, but has several very special characteristics that are unique and specific for use after a mastectomy. Manufactured with an integral pocket which holds the external breast prosthesis in place, these garments can be made of a variety of fabrics. Straps and bands may be wider, cups are usually fuller to accommodate the prosthesis and the midpoint is higher for support against the chest wall. One Step Ahead & HME carries several brands of post-mastectomy products that are comfortable, fashionable, and subtle.
The wigs, hats, and accessories at One Step Ahead & HME are free and provided by the American Cancer Society. Our mission is to help women cope during and after cancer treatment by providing wigs, hats, and scarves. Please come in to see our selections of wigs.
One Step Ahead & HME provides services through a Registered Respiratory Therapist available to assist patients with oxygen assistance and respiratory supplies. We carry a wide range of oxygen supplies such as oxygen concentrators, homefill machines, oxygen tanks, nebulizer compressors and supplies, CPAP/ BiPAP machines and supplies. Our Respiratory Therapist is available to provide you with oxygen set-ups in your home, to train you on the proper use of respiratory equipment and to answer any questions you may have. We also provide portable oxygen units to our oxygen patients upon request for extended traveling. Our Respiratory Therapist works with hospitals, family care practitioners, and sleep apnea specialists to assess your needs and to better serve you. We can assist you with mask and supply fittings for sleep apnea machines (CPAP, BiPAP, or VPAP machines), walk you through the proper use of a nebulizer machine, and administer pulse-oximetry tests to assess your oxygen levels at rest and exertion.
At One Step Ahead & HME, our Respiratory Department is trained and equipped to help you with your oxygen needs. Working with your primary physician, we can set up an oxygen concentrator in your home, a portable oxygen emergency tank (e-tank), portable oxygen tanks, and all oxygen supplies required for proper use of the equipment. This includes cannulas, tubing, filters, and humidifier bottles. We work with your doctor to make sure you have what you need as soon as you come home. Upon set-up of the oxygen equipment, we will provide you with the education and materials necessary on how to work the equipment and supplies, how to maintain the equipment, and who to contact for troubleshooting. As with all of our respiratory services, we stay in contact with you on a regular basis to ensure that you have the supplies you need, that your oxygen equipment is properly functioning, and that you are doing well with the equipment and your needs are being met. We want you to know that we care about you and your well-being and are here to serve you.
The standard treatment for sleep apnea is the use of a machine that provides support to keep your airway open while you are asleep. This can be accomplished with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in which a constant flow of air is provided via a face mask. The pressure of this air is determined based on your needs and is meant to prevent both apnea and snoring. A similar therapy is called BiPAP, which is a trademarked abbreviation for bilevel positive airway pressure. The "bilevel" component refers to the fact that there are two pressures of which the machine is able to alternate between. This allows you to breathe out against a slightly lower pressure. BiPAP is more often used to treat central sleep apnea. Our Respiratory Therapist is trained to work with your physician that is treating your sleep apnea to assess what type of machine is best for you and will set you up at the level prescribed to ensure a better flow of oxygen while you sleep. We will provide you with the sleep apnea machine that best fits your needs and fit you with a mask that is right for you. As your sleep apnea equipment and service provider, we will ensure that you have the proper supplies needed to use your CPAP or BiPAP machine, to maintain the functionality of your machine, and to give you comfort while you sleep. We will continue to stay in contact with you as a CPAP or BiPAP patient to keep your supplies up-to-date and to be here for any questions or concerns that you might have.
"Nebulizers are commonly used for the treatment of cystic fibrosis, asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases." Nebulizers use oxygen or compressed air to break up medical solutions and suspensions into small aerosol droplets that can be directly inhaled from the mouthpiece of the device. At One Step Ahead & HME, our Respiratory Therapist can provide you with a nebulizer machine and supplies with a prescription from a doctor. We will equip you with how to use the equipment, how to maintain it, and remain available to you should you have any questions or concerns. We provide a variety of nebulizer machines, nebulizer kits, and masks, including pediatric for children.
ORTHOTICS AND FOOTWEAR
One Step Ahead & HME carries shoe brands such as New Balance, Vionic, Dr. Comfort, and Ariats.
New Balance can provide you the comfort you need when working, walking, or running. They provide great support for everyday wear. Because feet don't come in one or two widths, and because shoes that fit better perform better, New Balance shoes come in a wide range of widths and sizes. An innovative approach to athletic footwear, New Balance's philosophy is simple: "Listen, learn and refine." Twenty-five percent of New Balance shoes are produced by the US workforce, using US and imported materials.
Before you can really understand how New Balance's advanced shoe technology can help your feet feel better and help the rest of your body avoid injury, you need to know a little bit about the shoe construction. All shoes are made up of 4 sections: the uppers, the insoles, midsoles, and outsoles. Besides providing increased ventilation or increased durability, the uppers aren't much of a factor in shoe comfort, which leaves:
"The cushioning and comfort of your athletic shoes comes from the midsole. That’s what provides the cushioning. The New Balance midsole technology is called Abzorb. It’s a proprietary technology New Balance created with the help of Dupont. It has the lightweight and comfort characteristics of EVA foam, but it stays bouncy much longer than EVA and other foams. In engineering terms, it resists compression set, which means it lasts longer. And that means you’ll replace your shoes well before their cushioning starts to degrade."
You are replacing your athletic shoes each season aren’t you?
"Your outsoles or outer soles are quite literally the rubber that hits the road, comprised of the rubber your tread is made of and everything between your midsole and the pavement. More importantly for shoe technology, the outsole is also were almost all of a shoe’s supporting and motion control technology is located. This is the technology that helps support your foot’s natural structures and movement, or to compensate for your body’s natural gait or stride." When you come into our store, we can give you an individualized gait analysis and also check the wear on your old shoe’s outsole. These things will tell us if you pronate, over-pronate, or supinate when you walk or run. If you pronate, you probably just need cushioning, and no motion control. But if you over-pronate, you’ll want shoes that provide extra support and motion control. New Balance accomplishes this with Rollbar, Medial Post, and End Cap technology. Increased support can also be provided by New Balance’s proprietary Stability Web, which helps provide extra arch support and can be a heaven-sent help for people suffering from Plantar Fasciitis.
The insoles are typically the removable bit of padding that goes inside the shoe between your foot/sock and the sewn-in lining of the shoe. We offer a fully customized fit at our store, by providing customers with a choice of after market insoles. Besides the insoles that come with your New Balance shoes, we also offer Quadra Step and custom insoles. A top-shelf insole paired with a proper fitting shoe can make a world of difference in how your feet feel at the end of the day or the end of a run.If you haven’t experienced this before, we urge you to come into the store and see for yourself.
